Clouds, Light, Fog, Vows: Unfiltered Garapatta Big Sur Elopement

Paul and Emma’s Garapatta Big Sur elopement.

Clouds. Light. Fog. Repeat.

If you’re thinking of eloping in Big Sur, here’s your gentle nudge: do it. You don’t need perfect weather—you need presence, intention, and a coastline that knows how to set the tone.

Emma and Paul flew in from Indiana to elope somewhere that felt far from everything—somewhere wild, cinematic, and unfiltered. They landed on Big Sur. And Big Sur delivered.

This little stretch of Highway 1 doesn’t promise perfect weather, but it does serve main character energy. And that’s exactly what these two got.

The kind of day that shifts every few minutes. The kind of light that makes you pause. The kind of place that doesn’t need much—just two people ready to make it real.

We wandered cliffs and hidden turnouts, chasing the weather as much as the view. They exchanged vows surrounded by nothing but hazy skies and the sound of the Pacific. It was intimate, unfussy, and everything it needed to be.

Their ceremony was led by Dean Liapis, a licensed officiant based in Monterey, California, who specializes in elopements in wild places. Dean brought warmth, ease, and intention to the day (elopewithdeanliapis.com, @elope_with_dean_liapis). If you’re looking for someone who knows how to hold space without making it feel performative, he’s your guy.

Big Sur is moody and a little unpredictable, but that’s what makes it magic. Whether you’re planning a big elopement moment or something stripped down to just the two of you—it doesn’t need to be perfect. Let it be real. Let it be you.
