I remember this one wedding I was photographing early on. It was like... actually let me just look it up... August 2013... I delivered the photos, stoked on what I made for this couple, and then remember getting an email from the mom of the bride berating me for taking a photo of her and not including specifically “her feet”.

Context: Basically, I took a candid photo of her during cocktail hour and she was upset that the composition I chose ("chose" is a generous word here) was sort of the upper 2/3 of her person. Looked great, but it was also just one of dozens and dozens of random cocktail hour candids.

Anyway... most people would probably shrug that criticism off and maybe even give a lol and move along with their life. But here I am, 10 years later recounting this episode and sharing it with you. Because TBH, that quippy email cut pretty deep.

I'm a people pleaser through and through. And when I feel like I've disappointed someone, I take it pretty hard. Really hard. I've worked on contextualizing someone's disappointment and try not to let it affect me if it doesn't deserve to, but sometimes things slip through the cracks and sting.

So ever since that mom's email, every time I take a family photo or photos of the wedding party, I always include a photo "with the feet", because deep down I know it's easier to include a "correct" photo than to get another email like that one ever again.

The aftermath: I felt placed into a box as a photographer early on. For every experimental photo I deliver, or one that pushes the idea of "correct", I'm sure to include dozens of "safe" photos.

And I hate that I do that.

I'm not exactly sure what the point of sharing all this is. It all started when I saw this photo (the first one here) and almost rejected it, and then thought: why? I think it's beautiful. The light. The veil and the wind. It's a moment between photos, so it's not perfect or safe, but it's honest. She's looking at her puppy on the beach. His tie is crooked. He's not even fully in the frame. And if I listen to that mom and that email, it should go straight in the bin.

But fuck it. Let’s post it.

I'm in the middle of editing a wedding and slammed on the brakes at this photo right here.

Wedding days are special for so many reasons, but above all of them is this - witnessing relationships between the people you care about. I know dads who don’t show much daily outward affection, but I’ve seen those same dads crumble behind a microphone, destroy tissues watching their kid walk down the aisle, and give bear hugs like it’s the last hug they’ll ever give.

All this just hit me hard with a tidal wave of gratitude.

The thankfulness for being allowed into your lives these last 12 years, to tell stories, to photograph your weddings, will never be conveyed well enough because words just can’t do it.

For as long as I’m able, I’ll be right there with you making sure these hugs are remembered.

It’s their wedding day, the rings are minty fres

It’s their wedding day, the rings are minty fresh and the feeling of wearing something on their hands like this might be new. Might feel strange.

I don’t take this photo very often, I kind of feel it out, see if it makes sense for whatever story I’m trying to tell.

Whenever I take it though, I wish so badly I could be there with them on every anniversary to take the same photo and tell the story of aging together.

Hands accruing wrinkles and other evidence that time’s passing and life’s moving forward. Rings there all the while, bearing witness to the life of the wearer.

At some point, the newness of wearing a wedding ring, felt so long ago, is evenly exchanged for a feeling like… your hand isn’t your own without it.

This is the kind of place my brain goes to when I’m photographing a wedding.

I take photos to gift you a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.

i guess today is finally that day. fuck. feels. those bubbas have been part of her life since day one. i mean, i know we told her when she turns three that she has to let them go, and here she is doing it and moving on from them, but i don’t know if i am. stop growing up bb. please stay smol. swing set. that was the right birthday gift. it’s her favorite thing and now we can swing together as much as we want. sure, maybe a wood-fired hot tub would be nice under these redwoods sommmeeeday… but today, swing set was the right move. not ready to see this photo next to the same one i’ll take next year tho.

this light is absurd. and of course you’d look that direction on your own. TAKE THE PHOTO. …you’re a proper kid aren’t you, just standing there without our help, of course, because you haven’t needed our help to stand in years. to me it was last week.

those locks on the table are the very ones you were born with. i was the first human to touch them. and now they’re on that table.

you want to “do a crossword like dadda”? absolutely. yes please. i can’t rip this page out and find you a pencil fast enough.
