On Film X The Village Big Sur Wedding

A Wedding at The Village Big Sur, Through a 1969 Leica

There are places that feel less like venues and more like worlds you step into. The Village Big Sur is one of them.

Tucked into the redwoods along the river, it has a quiet, lived-in beauty—wood, moss, soft light, and space to breathe. Nothing about it feels overproduced. It invites presence. Conversation. Slowness. It’s the kind of place where a wedding doesn’t interrupt nature, it settles into it.

That sense of timelessness is exactly why these photographs were made the way they were.

I used a 1969 Leica SL (Leicaflex) for these photos — a fully mechanical camera built more than half a century ago—and exposed on Kodak film, ColorPlus 200 to be exact. No screens. No previews. No instant certainty. Just light, timing, and trust.

Why Film, Why This Camera

The Leica SL is heavy, deliberate, and honest. It demands intention. Each frame matters because there are only so many. You don’t overshoot. You wait. You watch. You feel the moment before you press the shutter.

That approach mirrors The Village Big Sur itself. Nothing here rushes. The ceremony unfolds under trees that have been standing for generations. Dinner happens at long tables under string lights. People linger. The day stretches gently into night.

Film responds beautifully to that rhythm.

Kodak film softens highlights, holds shadow, and renders skin with a depth that feels human rather than perfect. Whites glow instead of glare. Greens breathe. Candlelight stays warm. There’s grain—not as an effect, but as texture, as proof that light touched something real.

A Place That Rewards Attention

The Village Big Sur doesn’t need spectacle. Its beauty lives in small moments:
• a quiet embrace just off the path
• hands brushing during dinner
• a first dance under lanterns and tall grass
• the way dusk settles slowly through the trees

Film sees those moments differently. It doesn’t chase sharpness or drama. It notices how things feel.

The result is a collection of images that don’t look trendy or optimized for the moment. They look lived in. Like memories you already had, somehow preserved.

Timeless Places Deserve Timeless Tools

Pairing a historic venue with a historic camera wasn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It was about alignment.

The Village Big Sur carries history in its bones. The Leica carries it in brass and glass. Kodak film carries it in chemistry refined over decades. Together, they create photographs that feel grounded, warm, and enduring.

These images aren’t trying to be new.
They’re trying to be true.

And sometimes, the best way to honor a place—and a day—is to slow down enough to let it speak for itself.
